Medical certificate

As a professional pilot you must be a holder of so-called Class 1 Medical certificate. Under EASA rules, the Class 1 Medical is issued in accordance with Regulation Ec 1178/2011, Part MED. Without valid Class 1 Medical certificate, your professional pilot's licence will not be valid.

Why do you need Medical certificate

To start your Frozen ATPL modular flight training, it is sufficient to obtain less strict so-called Class 2 Medical certificate. However we have seen many pilots failing the initial Class 1 Medical examinations for the medical reasons they have not been aware before aero-medical examination.

The Aero-medical examination lasts 2 days

The Initial Class 1 Medical assessment is comprehensive multi-department assessment of your physical and mental health done by the aviation medical examiners. Upon the successful completion of Initial Class 1 Medical assessment, you will be issued with Class 2 Medical certificate as well.

Class 1 medical can only be issued by AeMC

To obtain your Class 1 Medical certificate you have to make an appointment at so-called Aero Medical Center (AeMC). There is usually at least  1 or few places in each EASA member state which provides such medical assessment. Those Aero Medical Centers are usually military hospitals. The Initial Aero Medical Assessment usually lasts 2 days. There is not so much to prepare. Major recommendation is to come well rested and sleep well before your medical assessment. The comprehensive medical examinations are evaluated by Aero Medical Examiners of that Aero Medical Center and decided if you meet the Part - MED Class 1 Medical certificate standards.

Our recommendation

We strongly recommend everyone whose intention is to spend couple of dozens of thousands Euro to attend the Class 1 Medical assessment before being enrolled into the training, so you could be sure your health status will not be a factor.

You will need to renew the validity of your Class 1 medical certificate latest before your CPL(A) skill test with EASA Flight Examiner.

Advice for future Professional pilots

If your age is below 30 years old and you do not have any significant limitations, your Class 1 Medical certificate stays valid 12 months, while at the same time your Class 2 Medical certificate stays valid for 5 years.

So you can conveniently commence your Frozen ATPL modular flight training with valid Class 1 Medical while being sure your medical status will not be an issue towards your Professional pilot licence. Once your Class 1 medical certificate expires after 12 months, you can still continue your Frozen ATPL training with your current Class 2 medical certificate, which stays valid.
