MEP(land)

The Multi-Engine Piston (Land) Class Rating under EASA allows a pilot to act as pilot-in-command (PIC) or co-pilot of multi-engine piston land aircraft. This is a class rating, not a type rating, meaning it applies to a group of similar aircraft rather than a specific model.

MEP(land)

As a professional pilot, you will be mostly required to operate the multi-engine aircraft. The MEP (Land) Rating allows you to operate multi-engine piston aeroplanes. For the pilots aiming for a professional pilot career, the MEP(land) class rating is a must have. By obtaining the MEP(Land) class rating you will be authorized to fly as a pilot-in-command on an aeroplane constituting into the MEP(land) class rating in accordance VFR. It is a major step in pilot training, opening doors to advanced licenses, multi-engine instrument ratings, and professional aviation careers.

Purpose of having MEP(land) class rating

The final aim of the instrument rating phase is to obtain the necessary skills, competences and mainly the licence endorsement to operate the single-pilot multi-engine aircraft under the instrument flight rules. Since you already hold the instrument rating single-engine, you need to progress to the multi-engine phase. Before attending the instrument rating multi-engine extension, it is necessary to learn to fly the multi-engine aircraft under the visual flying rules (visually) especially during the assymetric thrust operations with the one-engine inoperative. That is the purpose of this module.

Privileges of MEP(land) class rating

The rating enables you to act as PIC or co-pilot of multi-engine piston landplanes. You will learn essential engine-out handling, system management, and advanced performance skills required for commercial and airline careers.

With a valid MEP(Land) class rating you may:

  • Fly multi-engine piston aeroplanes as PIC
  • Operate the multi-engine aircraft under VFR

Our recommendation

Rather than fancy and shiny aircraft with full of hi-tech avionics, you need a good flight instructor to explain you and to demonstrate the fundamentals of the multi-engine operations. MEP(land) training is not only about to know which leg to push during the asymmetric flight, but also to know what the critical engine is and how important is to calculate the proper CG for the OEI flight. Every detail counts!

MEP(land) training is an important base of skills and knowledge for any further multi-engine flying. Regardless of the aircraft size and type, the general OEI handling, Vyse and CG movement sharing the same principles.

Pay careful attention, who your instructors are. Rather then airliners with thousands of hours in jetliners, opt for a flight instructor with the vast experience flying the small planes who will be able to demonstrate you Vmc, proper OEI handling and connect theory with the actual flight training.

MEP(land) Pre-Entry Requirements

  • Licence: at least PPL(A)
  • Experience: 70 hours as PIC

 MEP(land) Theoretical Knowledge

The theoretical knowledge course consists of two separate modules.  First module deals with general  multi-engine operation and includes 7 hours of groundschool in multi-engine aeroplane operations and covers following topics:

  • Aviation legislation
  • Asymmetric flight
  • Principles of flight
  • Control in asymmetric flight
  • Minimum control and safety speeds
  • Performance in asymmetric flight

Additional hours are focused on the variant-related theoretical knowledge instruction such as:

  • General description and differences
  • Engine
  • Aircraft systems
  • Flight instruments
  • Cockpit, cabin and cargo
  • Emergency equipment
  • Limitations
  • Load and balance
  • Emergency procedures
  • EFIS (if applicable)

MEP(land) Flight Training

Phase 1: Normal ops – takeoff, landing, cruise, power management

Phase 2: Abnormal ops – engine failures, single-engine handling, single-engine go-around

The MEP(land) flight training lasts 6 hours and consists of the sessions required to gain the skills for the safe operation of multi-engine aircraft. During 2 hours and 30 minutes you will master the normal conditions of multi engine aeroplane operations such as traffic patterns and normal maneouvers. Additional 3 hours 30 minutes of will be focused on acing the engine failure procedures and asymmetric flight techniques. You will learn how to manage the engine faillure after take-off (EFATO), in-flight engine shutdown (IFESD) and how to land with one engine inoperative (OEI).

Training areas of special emphasis consist of:

  • Recognising and handling engine failure during takeoff roll (rejected takeoff).
  • Engine failure after takeoff (EFATO) — handling at/after Vmc.
  • Engine shutdown in flight: securing the inoperative engine (mixtures, props, fuel, electrics).
  • Flying with one engine inoperative:
    • Straight-and-level flight
    • Climbs, descents, turns
    • Circuit and landing with simulated engine failure.
  • Restarting procedures.
  • Asymmetric circuit and landing (simulated engine failure)
  • Go-around on two engines and with one engine inoperative.
