IR-SE to IR-ME Upgrade Requirements
1. Flight Training Requirements
-
Under EASA Part-FCL, upgrading from SE-IR to ME-IR requires a minimum of 5 hours of dual instruction in instrument flying.
-
Out of these, up to 3 hours may be conducted in an FFS or FNPT II simulator.
-
The remaining portion must take place in an actual multi-engine aeroplane.euroGA
-
2. Theoretical Knowledge Requirements
-
Prior to the ME-IR skill test, candidates must complete:
-
A minimum of 6 hours of flight training, and
-
7 hours of theoretical knowledge instruction (ground school).Flight Examiner
-
3. Skill Test (Checkride)
-
After the training, the candidate must pass the ME-IR skill test administered by an EASA-designated examiner.
-
This involves:
-
An oral/theoretical segment covering IFR procedures, meteorology, air law, etc.;
-
A flight portion (approx. 1 to 1.5 hours), plus briefing and debriefing, totaling around 3 hours for the entire checkride process.Flight Examiner
-
4. Privileges and Reciprocity
-
Once you obtain your ME-IR, you automatically hold SE-IR privileges, provided your single-engine class ratingremains valid.euroGAFLYER Forums
-
Additionally, ME-IR remains valid even without a current MEP (multi-engine piston) class rating, and keeping your ME-IR current also ensures your SE-IR remains current.
| Component | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Flight Training | 5 hours dual instruction in instrument flying (≤3 hrs in simulator) |
| Additional Training | 6 hours flight + 7 hours theoretical instruction |
| Skill Test (ME-IR) | Oral/theoretical segment + ~1–1.5 hr flight, total ~3 hrs |
| Privileges | ME-IR confers SE-IR privileges; ME-IR validity maintains SE-IR validity |
Key Takeaways
-
Valid path: The EASA-regulated upgrade path from SE-IR to ME-IR is well-defined and available.
-
Efficiency: With only around 5 hours of required training (plus theory and testing) and largely simulator-based lessons, it's a relatively efficient upgrade.
-
Convenience: ME-IR holders inherit SE-IR privileges, streamlining operations and currency requirements.
