Private Pilot Licence
PPL(A) / SEP(Land)
The EASA PPL(A) (Private Pilot Licence – Aeroplane) is the most common entry-level licence in Europe. It allows you to fly light aircraft as Pilot in Command (PIC) for non-commercial purposes.
Privileges of a PPL(A)
-
Act as PIC on single-engine piston aeroplanes (SEP) or touring motor gliders (if endorsed).
-
Fly VFR (Visual Flight Rules) during day (and night if you hold the night rating).
-
Carry passengers, but not for commercial remuneration.
-
Add additional ratings (night rating, MEP(land), instrument rating, etc.).
Validity & Recency
-
The licence itself never expires.
-
The SEP class rating (attached to it) is valid for 2 years. To keep it valid you must either:
-
Fly at least 12 hours in the last 12 months (including 6 as PIC, 12 take-offs/landings, plus 1 hour with an instructor), or
-
Do a proficiency check with an examiner before expiry.
-
Next Steps / Common Add-ons
-
Night Rating → allows night flying.
-
IR (Instrument Rating) → fly IFR.
-
MEP(land) → fly multi-engine piston aeroplanes.
-
CPL(A) → upgrade to a professional licence if you want to fly for hire.
